What is Obesity surgery

Also called: Bariatric surgery, Bypass surgery, Gastric banding, Weight loss surgery

Exercise and eating right are the best ways to lose weight. But many people have tried those methods for years and still can’t lose excess weight that can cause serious health problems.

If you’re very overweight and can’t lose pounds with a healthy diet and exercise, weight loss surgery also known as Bariatric surgery might be an option for you.

The surgery is offered usually:

  • men who are at least 100 pounds overweight

  • women who are at least 80 pounds overweight

If you are somewhat less overweight, surgery still might be an option if you also have diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea.

Weight loss surgery limits the amount of food you can take in.

Some operations also restrict the amount of food you can digest.

Many people who have the surgery lose weight quickly. If you follow diet and exercise recommendations, you can keep most of the weight off.

The surgery has risks and complications, however, including infections, hernias and blood clots.

For people in this frustrating situation, weight loss surgery (Bariatric surgery) may be good option.

Gastric banding is an alternative to gastric bypass that may reduce your food intake

Adjustable gastric banding is a restrictive type of weight loss surgery. In a nutshell, it involves placing a silicone band with an inflatable inner collar around the upper stomach to restrict food intake. This creates a small pouch and a narrow passage to the lower stomach. This small passage delays the emptying of food from the pouch and causes a feeling of fullness.

The silicone band can be tightened or loosened over time to change the size of the passage.

Other terms for adjustable gastric banding are laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and gastric banding.

Two techniques used for gastric bypass surgery

The gastric bypass procedure is a type of bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery designed to reduce your food intake if you have tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise.

Gastric bypass can greatly improve the quality of life not only because of an improvement in appearance and an increase in mobility, but also because it can reduce the number and severity of health problems that overweight people are prone to suffer, such as diabetes and heart/circulation problems.

It is a complex procedure performed under general anesthesia — you sleep through it. Time in surgery is approximately one to four hours, followed by a one- to seven-day stay in the hospital.

Currently, two techniques are available for gastric bypass:

  • Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (traditional and laparoscopic)

  • Biliopancreatic diversion bypass

Both Techniques Use a Bypass when a small stomach pouch is created to curb food intake, by stapling a portion of the stomach.

Then, a Y-shaped part of the small intestine is attached to the stomach pouch so that food can bypass the duodenum, as the bypass extends to the initial portion of the jejunum.

The bypasses of the small intestine are formed to decrease the absorption of food nutrients. These techniques significantly restrict food intake and reduce hunger to promote healthy weight loss.

Most of the weight loss is evident within one year and is usually completed by the end of the second year.
